Upscaling and up-conversion are the same. (See details below.) If you want to get the best picture and sound, it will always be the expensive route. An up-converting DVD player will have a good picture, but Blu-ray will be much better. You don’t have to get the latest release to get the best picture, but there are some extras you get with the new players, so you can save some money with the older players which are now dropping in price. In my opinion, Sony and Samsung are good brands to consider. If you already have a good home theater setup, you won’t need to upgrade the stereo. Sure, they now have the latest digital sound processing, but you probably won’t notice much difference with one of these expensive recievers unless you are really big on getting perfect sound and have a large room. I’d say a system with 5.1 channel surround is probably adequate for most people. Larger rooms would benefit with the 7.1 channels.
