Many people use the terms “interior designer” and “interior decorator” interchangeably. Although the roles of each may at times overlap, they are not identical careers. Once you know the differences between the two professions, you will better understand which to consult when planning your home's next makeover.

 Distinguishing the Difference

An interior designer uses his knowledge of people’s habits and behaviors to create inviting, safe, and functional spaces for homes and offices. Her job goes beyond picking out paint colors, furnishings, and other decorative items. Interior designers make sure room designs conform to building and safety codes as well. They can create designs to accommodate specific acoustic or sound transmission needs, such as creating a “sound-proof” movie room in a home. Simply put, interior designers work not only with the decorative aspects of room design, but also with the actual structure and organization.

The job of interior decorator is to adorn and decorate a space with fashionable furnishings and accessories. They take care of the aesthetic aspects of a home's design such as paint, fabric, furnishings, and lighting choices.

Another difference between these two professions is that some states require interior designers to be licensed by passing a test issued by the National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NDIDQ). Decorators, on the other hand, do not require any special licensing or formal training. Interior designers and interior decorators each perform an important job while handling distinctly different aspects of the design and adornment of a space.

Which One Do You Need?

Given the descriptions and differences between the two titles, how do you decide whether you need an interior designer or an interior decorator? It depends entirely on the job you wish to have completed. If you are remodeling your home’s kitchen, for example, you will require the services of an interior designer who will be knowledgeable on aspects of functionality and safety.

To take a closer look, let’s say you need a kitchen that will accommodate someone in a wheelchair. An interior designer will plan the construction of the room with the necessary modifications such as lowered sinks and countertops. The designer can also help with the final decorative touches such as paint, window furnishings, appliances, and other items.

On the other hand, if you wish only to give your kitchen a fresh updated look with new paint, flooring, cabinets, and countertops, an interior decorator can provide a room makeover. Her job entails creating a pleasing new look for the space through careful selection of color combinations, lighting choices, and other aesthetic items.
