An occurrence policy covers claims based on events occurring during that policy year, regardless of when the claim is actually made. The RRG does not currently offer occurrence coverage. A straight claims-made policy covers claims which are reported to the insurance company during that policy year, whenever the events resulting in the claim occurred, so long as they occurred subsequent to the insured’s retroactive date. The retroactive date is generally the effective date of the insureds first policy under the program, unless an earlier retroactive date (nose coverage) is granted. The policy does not cover claims reported after the end of the policy year. “Tail” coverage is available to cover these claims for an additional premium. A claims-made policy with prior acts (nose coverage) covers claims which arise out of treatment rendered during the period of claims-made coverage with a prior carrier, but that are not reported until after expiration of the claims-made coverage.
