What is the difference between Pyrethrin and Pyrethroids?
Pyrethrins are all natural insecticides derived directly from the chrysanthemum flower. On the other hand, Pyrethroids are a synthetic lab produced insecticides which contain petroleum distillates. Each of these insecticides have distinct properties, hence, their area of application are distinct. For example, pyrethroids are often used in misting system applications, such as, horse barns, dog kennels, and harsh spider infestations. If horses were treated with all natural water based pyrethrin, the product would biodegrade quickly, within 15 minutes, in the ultraviolet daylight. Many public county mosquito control systems incorporate many synthetic pyrethroids in their fogging solution as to prolong its effect. In most residential applications, we favor natural pyrethrins, as the misting solution of choice. The water based solutions are sufficient for controlling insects, so it is not necessary to use synthetic pyrethroids.
