Stage hypnosis is done for entertainment using volunteers who have been tested for high suggestibility. These people are put in a somnambulistic trance. This is when a person can walk, talk etc as if they are in a normal state of consciousness. Hypnotherapy is for therapeutic benefits. People go into a comfortable level of trance and are helped to make the changes they require. Self hypnosis can also be taught by the therapist.
