What is the difference between the Sunni and Shiah?

0

Shia literally means small group. Sunni literally means those who follow the path set by the prophet Mohammed. Their difference is majorly based on who will act as the leaders of the umma (umma meaning all Muslims). Sunni says leaders are by prestige (Those who are more appropriate to hold the seat of the prophet). Shia add this criteria to one more. They must be from the blood of the Prophets family called Alu-Bayt. Shia are not found in every Muslim country. Sunni is refered to all Muslims other than Shia. What people do not understand is that there are other different sects within Sunni. Two notable streams within the Sunni sect is Salafia stream and Suffi stream. Suffi stream inclines more of the spritual aspect of the religion and their aknowledge that the family of the Prophet deserves more respect. Salafi does not recognize any special respect of certain people just because of blood. Every thing is judged based on how one is strong in his faith.

It started as a political difference, who will lead the Muslim Umma after the death of Muhammad (pbuh).
