What is the difference between the theory of plate tectonics and continental drift?

They’re basically the same but plate tectonics is informed by much sounder geophysical data, coming after WW 2 and the fifties, when science was technologically able to answer a lot of questions about what goes on 3 miles deep in the ocean and what the structure of the crust and mantle was in the so-called “ring of fire” in the Pacific Basin. Before that continental drift was mere speculation based on fossil evidence that noone in geology took seriously.
