What is the difference between unclassified and classified staff?

Unclassified personnel are primarily associated with institutions of higher education and include faculty, academic staff, graduate assistants, postdoctoral scholars (e.g., postdoctoral fellows and research associates), student hourlies, and limited appointees (those who serve at the discretion of the Chancellor, President, Board of Regents, or another authorized official who made the appointment).
