What is the differnce between American football and rugby?

There are far too many differences to list to be honest. The main differences being that in rugby (rugby union i’m talking about, not rugby league) you can only pass the ball backwards, you cannot tackle a man without the ball and you only have one team for offense/defence/special plays. You don’t have a set number of plays or minimum number of yards that you have to make like in American Football, plus you don’t get all of the pads and body armour like in American Football either. Try wikipedia, they’ll tell you everything you need to know.

American “Gridiron” Football IS what Rugby became in the United States. Main differences: Interference (blocking) is legal in Gridiron, not in Rugby. Scrimmage with direct snap replaced the loose Scrummage of old Rugby. Gridiron introduced the concept of downs and distance to gain to retain possession of the ball. Gridiron reduced kicking the ball to set-piece, very rules-restricted situations, i.e, free-kicks and scrimmage kicks made from behind the line only. Onside kicking from scrimmage, return kicks, and dribble kicks were made illegal over the years. Gridiron introduced the forward pass from scrimmage to compliment at first, then to replace the seldom-used forward onside kicking from scrimmage as a means to spread the defense and to advance the ball. Most of the old rugby kicking rules are still in force in Canadian Football, but almost never made use of. Gridiron also has evolved a suit of armor for player protection, since restriction on the violence of tackling was only mildly
