The eaeliest postmark has been reported as being on the 26th of August 1885. Before this some letters from Port Moresby had been endorsed with a Postmark “NG” enclosed in an oval of eight bars supplied by the Queensland Department of Posts and Telegraphs. Earlier letters probably had their stamps cancelled with a Cooktown postmarker. The stamps used in the early days and through to 1901 were those of the Colony of Queensland.
