The Japanese state intervened heavily in the domestic economy. You should look up MITI as they were the body which chose specific domestic industries to invest in and make national champions. These national champions were nurtured and as Japan also followed a programme of export led growth, became world leaders in their feild. An authoritarian state was also essential to Japanese economic development which excluded any opposition from power. Facing hostile communist regimes Japan encouraged Nationalist sentiments amongst the population which helped the government exclude oppostion. The most important factor by far though is that the USA wanted Japan to develop. DONT BELIEVE NEO – LIBERAL ECONOMICS with this one….Japanese development took place against the backdrop of the Cold War. Japan could not have developed if the USA didnt need them to be a buffer against Chinese, Korean and Soviet communism, even though the chinese and soviets hated each other but thats a different story.
