What is the effect of removing my ovaries (oophorectomy) on my risk of developing breast cancer?
In BRCA mutation carriers, removing one’s ovaries have been shown to cut the risk of developing breast cancer in half. The risk reduction is greatest when the procedure is done at a young age (< 35 years). There is no effect on breast cancer prevention if the ovaries are removed after a woman’s naturally occurring menopause. Oophorectomy is a surgical procedure. Besides convalescence from the procedure, oophorectomy will cause premature menopause with its associated effects in young women. Oophorectomy along with removal of the fallopian tubes substantially reduces a BRCA carrier’s risk of ovarian cancer.
