What is the egyptian influence on western art?
Egyptian art in itself is a very different thing indeed. One of the greatest preserved samples we have are the hieroglyphic paintings in many of the tombs and temples. The uniqueness in this time period is the fact that we are seeing profiles, and torsos turned in interesting angles. Egyptian art began a great period in art history where we were seeing proportion better than its predecessors such as Mesopotamia. There are a lot of clean lines, bold colors, and angles that were never produced in other cultural art in this way. Also, it is interesting that it has remained intact for over 5,000 years, a tribute to the skills of Egyptian artisans. They influenced the Greeks, who attempted to reproduce Egyptian art with the advancement of the contrapposto style. This was a figure with the weight shifted on one leg, turning the torso toward the other leg. This popular style can be seen in the later Greek and Roman sculptures, the numerous attempts at David, and in many paintings across art.
