What is the energy value for anhydrous vs. hydrous ethanol blends?
Though there is a 34% difference in energy content (HHV/LHV) between ethanol and gasoline, hybrid fuels consisting of midlevel ethanol blends actually increase the fuel efficiency of gasoline. This is due largely to oxygenated hydrocarbons. Research is currently being conducted to more fully understand this phenomena and determine optimal fuel efficiency for midlevel ethanol-gasoline blends (oxygenated hydrocarbons) which are being utilized in both legacy (non-flex fuel) and flex fuel vehicles (FFVs) in Europe and Brazil.
