What is the etiology of KD?
The longer that a single infectious agent cannot be identified as the cause of KD, the more the possibility must be considered that multiple agents, each of which can lead to a common pathway, may result in this clinical syndrome. Because conventional cultures and serologic studies clearly have been disappointing, future studies must employ newer technologies, including the tools of molecular biology. An infectious trigger for KD is strongly suggested by its clinical features and by the epidemiologic characteristics of Japanese epidemics that resemble the spread of classic viral agents through an area [6].
