What is the Fire Prevention Bureau?
The Fire Prevention Bureau is responsible for all fire and life-safety systems in the City with the main focus on apartments and commercial businesses. This process begins right at the site plan review with plan reviews of all new buildings and remodels of existing buildings. The review with comments is sent back to the architects and contractor. It is the responsibility of the architect and/or contractor to review the comment sheet and make the necessary changes, if any, required by the Fire Prevention Bureau. When the job is completed, a final occupancy inspection is performed. Any necessary items for code compliance is completed at this time. Firefighters then annually perform maintenance life-safety inspections of all commercial occupancies to ensure that the existing systems put in at the opening inspection are still in place and operable. Fines are assessed for those occupancies that fail to correct the violations in a timely manner. The Building Department inspects apartments.
