What Is The Food Like In Portugal?
The food in Portugal is very good. Simple ingredients well prepared, based on the season and region and mainly dependent on meat, fish, olive oil, tomato and spices. Homemade bread and cheeses, hearty soups and some surprising combinations like meat and shellfish cooked together. Nothing typifies Portuguese cuisine more than seafood. These include everything from swordfish, anchovies, salmon, sea bream, bass and more. In the Estremadura region around Lisbon, sea food is popular. The fish market just outside the city is also the largest the country. In other places, away from the sea, meat, cheese and sausages add variety. In the Southern region of Algarve, close to North Africa and influenced by the Moors, traditional sweets with figs and almonds reflect it. Portuguese food is traditional, yet imaginative and inventive. Enjoying good food and wine and eating out are important aspects of Portuguese life.
