What is the genotype and what does it mean?
The hepatitis virus is made up of highly variable strains. All strains can be grouped based upon their biochemical and genetic make up. There are 6 major genotypes and many subtypes of HCV found throughout the world. In North America, genotypes 1,2,3 are most common, with genotype 1 found in approximately 70-75 % of individuals. Genotype 2 and 3 is found in approximately 25%.
