In the basement of NERV, there is a giant nailed to a red cross which we first see when Kaji shows Misato. At this point it is referred to as Adam. However, we have already been introduced to Adam as the embryo that Kaji smuggled from Germany (episode 8). The Giant on the cross is Lilith, the small embryo is Adam.
