Beltain. . . The Maypole (May Pole) is of Celtic origin and is a phalic symbol representing the sperm of new life. Traditionally, young virgin girls hold the white ropes or coloured tapes/ribbons which are attached to the top of the pole. The girls then dance around the pole in a patern which then causes the ropes or coloured tapes/ribbons to form into platted pattern around the pole. The best known Maypole here in UK is the one errected each year at Padstow for the May Day Celtic fest.
