What Is The History Behind AmeriCorps Oakland?
Oakland University has hosted an AmeriCorps program since 1994. AmeriCorps Oakland was established to provide educational support during the school day, afterschool and during the summer along with providing Life Skill programs for youth and their families in Pontiac, Michigan. The AmeriCorps Oakland program mission is to “Make A Difference” by getting things done in the community, building capacity, connecting and collaborating to develop and share resources in the community and to develop an ethic of lifelong volunteerism and service. During the 1994-1997 program, AmeriCorps Oakland focused on teaching children peaceful ways to resolve their conflicts by presenting resolution sessions to 5,849 children in middle and high school, training 240 middle school students as peer mediators and resolving 793 conflicts in the middle and high school settings.
