In late 1996, several horses were diagnosed with selenosis, and their owner later euthanized them. It was determined the selenosis was caused by elevated levels of selenium contained in water and vegetation in the area. The U.S. Forest Service associated these increased levels with mine waste from Maybe Canyon mine, which was not operated by Monsanto. At this time, the phosphate industry in southeast Idaho joined together to investigate the potential selenium issue on current and past phosphate mining operations in southeast Idaho, including our past mining sites. Until this incident in 1996, selenium contamination from phosphate mining was not well understood. In fact, at that time the technology to detect elevated selenium levels didn’t exist.
