Answer Hi Joe Oscars like to hide and need to have lots of hiding places in order to feel safe and secure. Oscars also like to rearrange their tanks, so unless you don’t mind the Oscar changing things up a bit, use large and heavy pieces that will be harder for the Oscar to move. You should avoid using sharp or rough decorations that your fish may get hurt on, in case they run into them when spooked. If your Oscars do move things around in the tank, I wouldn’t waste time putting them back. They will move them again and you will give up long before they do. Like most other fish, especially Cichlids, they are more comfortable and will come out and show more activity if they have plenty of cover. You should make to of your tank space hiding places. Giving them sufficient cover also reduces stress and improves your Oscar’s immune system, reducing chance of disease. Also don’t use bright fluorescent or incandescent lights.
