It was an utter rout. The Soviets completely surrounded the city that the Germans had occupied and eventually they were forced surrender. There was no strong force other than that army in the south and it eventually led to the retreat of the other armies. The Soviets were on the offensive and it was nearly impossible to stop their armies because their numbers grew, the oil reserves supposed to be captured by the army at Stalingrad were never delivered and tanks were rapidly becoming a rarity. The Soviets brought to bear their numbers and oil reserves themselves and just kept on attacking endlessly.
