What is the jail sentence (years) for child abusers?
From nothing to life in prison. It depends entirely on the crime and the jurisdiction. Andrea Yeates, the woman in Texas with post partum depression at first got life in prison for drowning her five children. Personally, I think she should have been considered insane – she had a long history of severe depression and made no effort to hide her actions. But that’s Texas. Her appeal did overturn the original conviction and she was committed to a mental hospital. Others have gotten off with ten years or less for deliberately torturing their poor kids for years on end. Fortunately, the sentences for all kinds of child abuse are getting longer. A Catholic priest was recently sentenced to 10 years in Federal prison for trying to meet and have sex with an underage boy (who was really an FBI agent).
