What is the Landfill BPEM?
The Landfill BPEM gives direction on the best-practice siting, design, operation and rehabilitation standards for landfills, taking into account the risk they pose to the environment. It lists required outcomes and provides suggested measures to meet legislative objectives. The Waste Management Policy (Siting, Design and Management of Landfills) (WMP) establishes statutory requirements on landfills and applies to all Victorian landfills that receive solid, non-prescribed waste and/or Category C prescribed industrial waste. The WMP requires applicants or holders of works approvals or licences for landfill sites to meet the objectives and required outcomes of the Landfill BPEM. They should use the suggested measures to achieve the objective, and the WMP encourages innovative solutions rather than regulatory control.
