Recent press coverage has focused on the north-west region, where the new system has been implemented by United Utilities. United Utilities has apologised and acknowledges its mistakes in implementing these changes, which included miscalculating the site area of some customers’ premises. These mistakes led to confusion and inconvenience for some of its customers. The company is bringing in a series of measures to alleviate the concerns it has caused some of its customers in relation to surface water drainage charging. Scout and Guide groups, community amateur sports clubs and places of worship across the North West will have their 2009-10 bills for surface water drainage calculated using the ‘old’ charging system, which was last applied in 2007-08. For the majority of these customers this was a rateable value based charge, which will be updated to 2009-10 prices. This will reduce bills for these customers.
