What is the level of accomplishment that will be required to satisfy the MQR requirement?
The American Mathematical Society has provided a set of guidelines – which are a good starting point. It is proposed that the departments comprising the providers and users of the MQR requirement compile a list of topics and competencies with the expectation that something on the order of, say, 70% of these be covered by an MQR course. That is, there could be MQR courses of different “flavors” (e.g., environmental, economic, statistical, etc.;) but there would be a strong overlap of basic math skills (e.g. simple algebra, reading a graph, manipulation of large/small numbers, estimation, etc.;).
