What is the name for different types of animals like mammals, reptiles, birds. is it called a class?
The Linnean system of classification separates a bunch of different kinds of animals according to shared similarities. We fit these groupings into more or less artificial hierarchies of organization, depending on how fundamental we feel the differences of the kind of organism are. So within the Kingdom Animalia, there are a number of different groups known as Phyla. Phylum Porifera is sponges. Phylum Cnidaria is sea anemones, corals and jellyfish. Phylum Mollusca is snails, slugs, octopus, clams, and oysters. Phylum Echinodermata is sea stars, sea cucumbers, sea urchins and crinoids. Phylum Arthropoda is all of the hard-shelled critters with jointed legs, including lobsters, crabs, insects, spiders and scorpions. Phylum Chordata includes all of the critters with a dorsal, hollow nerve-cord – including those that have them sheathed in a segmented bony spine (Subphylum Vertebrata). Underneath Phylum there are indeed different Classes. Within the Vertebrates, Classes include: Class Osteic
