The NYVIP is a program that includes a test of the emission control systems of vehicles that have a model year of 1996 or newer. The NYVIP helps NYS to comply with the Federal Clean Air Act, decreases the emissions from motor vehicles, and reduces air pollution. The NYVIP uses equipment at NYS-licensed inspection stations and the on-board diagnostic system (OBDII) of the vehicle to verify that the emissions control systems of the vehicle function correctly. The station uses the equipment, and an approved communications system to report the inspection results to the DMV. The inspection station must purchase the NYVIP equipment from SGS Testcom.
