The "new carpet smell" comes from a by-product called 4-phenylcyclohexene otherwise known as 4-PC, which is from the latex binder that holds the fibers and backing together. The odour is in no way harmful and will disappear within 48-72 hours after installation, as with any new product. If you are sensitive to odors, ventilation of the area will speed up the dissipation.
