What is the philsophy behind the metaphysical poetry movement?
there isn’t any particular philosophy behind the metaphysical school of poetry … it was basically an intensely baroque style of poetry that featured bizarre, intense comparison (metaphor and simile) … … if anything, it hearkened back to the old Medieval notions of multiple levels of interpretation … that creation is radically analogous, one level standing for any other level …. — metaphysical poetry wasn’t “about” anything … rather it was poetry in which poets tended to make extremely and surprising leaps of the imagination … so John Donne compares his erect penis to a soldier standing guard and urges his mistress to hurry to bed since even when the “foe” is near, the soldiers might “tire with standing” before the battle begins … in other words, he develops a big ol’ complex epic battle imagery to warn his girlfriend that if she doesn’t hurry, he’s gunna lose his erection … that’s the METAPHYSICAL turn! ——— again … no particular message … but T.S.
