What is the primary role of the manager?
Before looking at the primary role of the manager, it is necessary to look at some of the perceived and assigned roles of managers. Management means many things, none of which gets to the primary role of the person filling that position. The assigned or perceived role of a manager depends on the level at which that person works. To the worker who is supervised by a first-line supervisor, the manager is the problem solver, the motivator, and the individual who controls on-the-job performance. That person makes assignments and determines when the job has been done or when improvements need to be made. That person evaluates performance and determines, or at least influences, promotions and raises.
