What is the process and schedule for picking the best route, getting it approved, and constructing the facilities?
The route selection process includes desktop research, stakeholder consultation, and environmental, social, and economic study. Consultation on specific routes will be starting soon and will continue through to the end of 2009. The route segments will be adjusted, removed, or added in response to consultation and further study, with preferred and alternative routes being identified. A facilities application will be filed with the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) at the end of 2009 or early 2010, and it is expected that the AUC will issue its decision on the application by late 2010. The AUC will have the discretion to approve the application, approve it with conditions, or deny it. If approved, construction of the power line would begin in late 2010 or early 2011, with the line expected to be in service by 2013.
