First, you can use the linktype (http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/types.html#type-links) as specified in HTML 4 (http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/). A well known example of this is rel=”stylesheet”. Second, you “can extend the rel attribute using a profile” (http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/types.html#type-links), but “HTML doesn’t specify/recommend a profile format (http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/types.html#idx-link_type-2)”. XMDP can be used to formally define new rel values.
