What is the purpose of calcium chloride when immobillising an enzyme?
The Sodium Alginate is dripped into the Calcium Chloride solution to form the beads which contain the immobilised enzyme. Although I’m not sure of the exact chemical reaction involved, basically, Calcium Chloride has the effect of making the Sodium Alginate form a “skin” on the outside of the bead so that it doesn’t dissolve in the substrate solution.
