What is the purpose of the acetic alcohol (Farmers fluid) is in the root tip mitosis investigation?

Acetic alcohol (Farmer’s fluid):- 3 parts of absolute alcohol : 1 part of glacial ethanoic (acetic acid), which should be freshly mixed. Industrial spirit or 95% ethanol can be used in place of absolute alcohol, but chromosomes may not be as clearly defined. This is a fixative, which I believe is to stabilise the structures and prevent chemical and structural changes whilst the material is undergoing staining and mounting.
