What is the relevance of special education?

0

Think about what happened a hundred years ago to children with disabilities: Before there was “special education” kids which special needs or disabilities were sent to institutions which basically warehoused them, like a prison. Families were embarrassed to admit they had kids like that and sometimes they kept them locked up in their homes. People thought they were “possessed” by the devil. The relevance is we need to see all children as capable and contributing to society. I have seen young people with severe disabilities tell time, count money, budget, show up for work, stay on the job for years, never call in sick, punch a time clock, take public transportation home and live independently!. Most business owners would die to have an employee like that! Many non-disabled persons can’t even do that! No education system is perfect, but parents, teachers and concerned others all are trying to educate society to accept and believe in all persons ,despite their differences.
