What is the role of bisphosphonates in treatment of anorexia nervosa-associated bone loss?
Bisphosphonates decrease osteoclast function and bone resorption; however, they have not been studied in patients with osteoporosis and anorexia nervosa. Although these agents have been suggested for use, some researchers believe they have minimal utility, because they will not correct the imbalance between bone formation and bone resorption found in patients with anorexia. In addition, it has been suggested that because estrogen, a potent anti-resorptive agent, has not been proven effective in patients with anorexia, bisphosphonates will not either.
