The use of physiotherapy (massage therapy) for pleurisy will depend greatly on the cause and subsequent treatment method. If it is a bacterial or viral infection that is causing the pleurisy, which is referred to as pneumonia, then massage of any kind would be contraindicated. This is especially true if they have a fever. This is what is referred to as the acute phase. Once the signs and symptoms have subsided, in particular after they have been treated by a doctor, then some mild massage may be helpful to dislodge some of the phlegm that has accumulated in the lungs. A good technique for this would be tapotement which is a tapping, cupping, or gentle pounding to their back. For someone with chronic pleurisy, it would be wise for the massage therapist, or physiotherapist, to work in conjunction with the other members of the health care team.
