What is the Schengen acquis?
The Schengen acquis is the set of rules which has been adopted in an inter-governmental framework and have been integrated in the framework of the European Union with the entry into force of the Treaty of Amsterdam. Countries seeking EU membership must adopt this acquis ‘in full’ into their own national legislation. These rules consist of: • the agreement signed in 1985; • the convention signed in 1990; • the accession protocols with Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Austria, Denmark, Finland and Sweden; • decisions and declarations adopted by the Executive Committee as well as acts adopted by the organs which the Executive Committee has conferred decision-making powers. The Schengen acquis as it has been integrated in the framework of the European Union has been published in OJ L 239 of 22.9.2000.
