What is the Situational irony in the story “The Cask of Amontillado”? ?
Situational irony is when what happened is the opposite of what was expected. The biggest situational irony in the story is Poe leading the reader to believe that the events are taking place in the present, when in fact they occurred 50 years in the past. Another example of situational irony is Fortunato belonging to the Masons, even though Montresor is the one performing masonry. Verbal irony, in case you were wondering, occurred when Montresor said Fortunato’s health was precious, and dramatic irony is present because the reader knows what Montresor will do, but Fortunato does not.
