What Is The Smartest Breed of Dog?

I can’t tell you which is the smartest breed of dog, but i can tell you that the Pomeranian has a lot of empathy for humans. To give you an example, when my husband was fired from his job he was very depressed. he tells me that one day in desperation he was sitting and crying his eyes out, when he felt something touching him repeteadly on his thigh, it was our 8 yr old Pom trying to comfort him. This story is coming from a man that never wanted anything to do with the dog. They have become the best of friends.

Referring to intelligence, the border collie is known to be the smartest breed of all dogs. They are energetic, hard working, brilliantly smart, responsive, keen and alert. It is very affectionate toward friends, but may be reserved towards strangers. Any tendencies this breed shows toward viciousness, nervousness or shyness can be considered serious faults. These dogs originated in the late 1800s around the border country of England and Scotland. They are widely known for their ability to herd and control sheep. Border collies are mostly used on farms to handle many groups of various livestock, but they have also become very popular pet and sport dogs. Owners of this breed have said that their border collie can work out problems on its own and easily obey commands. With this dog, breed standards differ depending on what the breed registry is more attracted to– performance or appearance. There are certain standards used to conclude the breeding quality of a border collie. One standard

All of the arguments about “this breed is smarter” are wrong. Completely wrong. Everyone likes to think that their particular breed is “the smartest” (I’m no exception) except that the best research on this issue shows that no breed of dog is smarter than any other breed. There can be differences in intelligence between one dog and another in the same breed (better pedigree, temperament differences). But the argument that one breed is smarter than another has been proven wrong. I know, there is the Stanley Coren book which led to series of weblists on the “smartest dogs.” But Coren’s work on this issue is silly: he asked show and obedience judges “which dogs are more likely to obey on the first command?” He then assumed that: (a) that was an accurate measure of intelligence, (b) that these judges would know and (c) that all breeds are well represented in these shows (they aren’t: mixed breeds aren’t in them, breeds that aren’t registered with AKC aren’t in them, and breeds not widely h

Border Collie, then Poodle (see link below). Dogs have been selectively bred for intelligence as well as looks and behavior, so there is a definite ranking. Not surprisingly, lap dogs and bulldogs are at the bottom of the list. I just watched a documentary on one of the Discovery channels where they explored dog intelligence. Researchers started out breeding wild dogs for human compatibility, and as each generation was born, they began looking and acting like domestic dogs, and getting smarter. The documentary showed two genius dogs who could perform thinking tasks that totally baffled researchers. They were both Border Collies.
