Students who are U.S. citizens between the ages of 17 and 25 and enrolled in one of the College’s Degree/License programs, can apply for the Maritime Administration Student Incentive Payment (SIP) during their freshman year. If approved for SIP, students are enrolled in the Merchant Marine Reserve (MMR) program administered by the Naval Science Department and receive an appointment as a Midshipman in the Naval Reserve. SIP students receive $3000 per year ($3000 at the start of the sophomore year, then $750 quarterly) and must serve in the inactive Naval Reserve for 8 years following graduation. Non-New York State residents, who qualify for and participate in this program, are charged New York State resident tuition rates.
