According to Article 39 of the FIFA rules, the tiebreaker is as follows, in order of preference: (1) Total points earned (2) Total goal differential (3) Total goals scored (4) Points earned among matches played amongst tied teams (there can be 3 tied teams) (5) Goal differential among matches played amongst tied teams (6) Goals scored among matches played amongst tied teams (7) Drawing of lots What this means is if England beats Algeria by 2 or more goals, the US beats Algeria 1-0 and England and Slovenia tie 1-1, lots will determine who advances between the US and Slovenia! If the US beats Algeria and either England or Slovenia beats the other, the US is in regardless.
