What is the treatment for heartworm disease?
• If caught early heartworm disease can be treated with intramuscular injections of a medication that kills the adult worms. • This treatment has inherent risks and hospitalization is required during treatment. • Recovery takes 1-2 months and it is recommended to limit exercise during that time (leash-walks only). • Complications such as heart failure or liver problems require special consideration. Further diagnostic tests may include an ultrasound of the heart and chest X-rays.
