What is the UN peacekeeping force doing to stop the fighting and protect civilians?
MONUC troops (the UN’s peacekeeping force in DR Congo) have been trying to stop the insurgency in the eastern Congo, but have been challenged by the magnitude of the fighting. MONUC has so far been unable to ensure the peace and protect the people of eastern Congo. Additional military support is urgently needed to help MONUC stop the violence, safeguard the people and allow aid agencies to provide help to all those that desperately need it. At the same time the international community needs to redouble its diplomatic efforts to ensure peace and find a lasting solution to the conflict. MONUC can only be effective if there is a peace to keep.
