If a VAT registered business has vatable supplies and exempt supplies, it must use a partial exemption method. Check out the HMRC website at www.hmrc.gov.uk and search for VAT partial exemption for a whole range of factsheets. Not the easiest read, but once you understand how a partial exemption scheme works, its fairly easy to perform the calculations.
