What is Track Lighting?

Track lighting is a great modern invention that allows you to install a series of lights that can point in a variety of directions in order to highlight and feature different areas of your room without blanketing the entire room in excess light. As is sometimes stated by decorators, "if you light everything you actually light nothing." What they mean is that when you bathe the entire room in the most amount of light possible you're not bringing focus to any of your best areas. You're making them all disappear instead of featuring certain areas at certain times. This kind of lighting is different. As you'd expect the lights are connected together by a track of sorts, and hung on the ceiling. Track lighting is an alternative to traditional wired lamps and fixed recessed lighting designs. Most track lighting systems use a length of exposed electrical wiring hidden inside a plastic or aluminum track. The track can be wired directly into pre-existing circuits or plugged into wall sockets for power. After the track has been mounted to the wall or ceiling, a separate lamp and socket assembly can be snapped into place anywhere along the track itself. Metal plates in the socket make contact with the charged wiring in the track, which in turn activates the lightbulb. Track lighting is very useful in situations where traditional lighting is problematic. One of the most common uses for track lighting is isolating a work of art or other prominent design element.
