TRT stands for tinnitus retraining therapy, or sound therapy. It basically involves training the person to ignore the sounds of their tinnitus. The person is fit with small devices that look like hearing aids. These devices deliver low-level sounds into the person's ears and over a long period of time (i.e., up to 2 years) they learn to ignore their tinnitus sounds. The length of training is very important because the sound never leaves the person so the training is to effect a change in the person's response to the sounds and not the sounds themselves. The training should enable the person to be less bothered by the sounds. This therapy requires extensive training and should be done only in consultation with an Audiologist trained in TRT.
